127 People Died in Riots After Arema FC vs Persebaya Surabaya Match, Indonesia Threatened by FIFA Sanctions

A total of 127 people died in a riot at the Arema FC vs. Persebaya Surabaya match which was held at the Kanjuruhan Stadium, Malang, on Saturday, October 1, 2022. The chaos then has the opportunity to make Indonesia get sanctions from FIFA because there are victims and there are rules that are violated.

As is known, the riot broke out after the home team suffered a 2-3 defeat to their arch-nemesis. Instantly hundreds of fans poured into the field.

The riots escalated when the fans clashed with the police who tried to disperse the crowd. Clashes between the police and fans were inevitable.

The situation became even more tense when the security forces started firing tear gas into one side of the stands. Reportedly from there, many supporters were trampled to the point of out of breath because they tried to escape from tear gas.

Finally, it was confirmed that this incident took the lives of approximately 127 people. This is the worst “bloody” incident that has occurred in the world of Indonesian football.

Unfortunately, the police’s decision to fire tear gas violated FIFA regulations. All of that is stated in the “FIFA Stadium Safety and Security Regulation” guidelines.

Precisely in Article 19 point B, it is stated that it is absolutely forbidden to use firearms and tear gas for crowd control. Here’s the full sound:

(19) Officers on the sidelines to protect players and officials and maintain public order, it is necessary to place stewards and/or police around the playing field. When doing so, the following guidelines should be considered:

a) Any steward or police officer stationed in the vicinity of the playing field is likely to be recorded on television, and therefore their behaviour and appearance must be of the highest standard at all times.

b) No firearms or “crowd control gas” may be carried or used. ) So far there has been no confirmation whether there will be sanctions due to this violation or not, including if any, in what form the sanctions will take.

But what is certain is that many are worried that Indonesia is in danger of being cancelled as the host of the upcoming 2023 U-20 World Cup.
