4 Drills for Beginners to Improve Running Form

Improving running form is a key aspect of enhancing performance, preventing injuries, and maximising efficiency.

Let’s face it, running with the grace of a gazelle is everyone’s dream. But more importantly, proper running form can help prevent injuries, improve efficiency, and make you look like a boss on the track or trail.

There are simple drills you can incorporate into your routine to improve your running form and become a more efficient runner.

Here are 4 easy drills to get you started:

1: Posture and Alignment

Think of proper posture as the backbone of good running form. It helps you maintain balance, reduces unnecessary strain on your muscles, and keeps you moving forward like a well-oiled machine.

Stand tall like you’re auditioning for the role of the next superhero. Engage your core, keep your shoulders relaxed, and imagine a string pulling you up from the top of your head. Practice good posture not just while running, but throughout your day.

2: Cadence and Stride Length

Cadence is basically how many steps you take per minute. A higher cadence can help improve your running efficiency and reduce the risk of overstriding, which can lead to injuries.

3: Arm Swing and Upper Body Mechanics

Your arms are not just for showing off those muscles. Proper arm swing helps with balance, momentum, and overall efficiency. Swing them like you mean it, but keep them relaxed.

Focus on swinging your arms forward and back (not across your body) in sync with your legs. Keep your elbows at a 90-degree angle and avoid tensing up. Your upper body will thank you for it.

4: Foot Strike and Ground Contact

Ever wondered if you’re a heel-striker, midfoot striker, or forefoot runner? No need for a detective – just observe your foot strike pattern.

Heel-strikers land on their heel first, midfoot strikers land on the middle of their foot, and forefoot runners land on their toes. Each has its pros and cons, so find what works best for you!

By consistently practicing these techniques and staying mindful of your form, you can become a more efficient and injury-resistant runner.

Remember, small adjustments in form can make a big difference, so keep refining your technique and enjoy the rewards it brings to your running journey.
