A total of seven top football players have managed to score the record for the most caps or appearances in international matches for their respective national teams.
Playing for the national team is the dream of all footballers. However, not many players have been called up by the national team and have successfully set records for their country on the international stage.
1. Sergio Ramos
This Real Madrid defender made his debut in the Spanish national team on March 26, 2005, when Spain faced China in a friendly match.
The match against Georgia in the World Cup Qualifiers marks Ramos’ 179th appearance for Spain. This is the record for most caps of all time in the Spanish national team.
2. Cristiano Ronaldo
Ronaldo continues to set records in his own name. This time the Juventus forward has cemented himself as the owner of the most caps with a record 172 appearances since making his debut in 2003.
This is a series of records that Ronaldo managed to set. Previously, CR7 successfully won the title as the top scorer in football history with a total of 770 goals in official matches. The record was created when he scored 3 goals in the Juventus vs Cagliari match on Monday, March 15, 2021.
3. Luka Modric
Modric made history when he led the Croatian national team to a 1-0 win over Cyprus on the second matchday of Group H of the 2022 World Cup qualifying for the European zone at the Rujevica Stadium, Sunday (28/3).
The Real Madrid midfielder overtook Darijo Srna in the most appearances of all time for the Croatian national team. Modric has now made his 135th appearance.
4. Diego Godin
Godin further extended the record for most caps in the Uruguay national team with 139 caps. Starting his debut in 2005, the former Atletico Madrid and Inter Milan player is still a mainstay player in the Uruguay national team’s back line.
5. Alexis Sanchez
The petite striker who played for Inter Milan made his debut for the Chilean national team in 2006 and has always been a mainstay on the international stage.
BR Football noted that Sanchez has now scored the record for most caps in Chile with 136 appearances and produced 43 goals and 41 assists.
6. Jan Vertonghen
The 1-1 draw achieved by Belgium when they visited the Czech Republic headquarters in World Cup qualifying was not the best result for Vertonghen. However, the Tottenham Hotspur defender managed to carve his name in the history books of the Belgian national team.
Vertonghen currently has 125 caps and is listed as the player with the most appearances for the Belgian national team.
7. Edin Dzeko
Dzeko, who now plays for AC Milan, is one of the players regularly called up by the Bosnia and Herzegovina national team. Since making his debut in 2007, Dzeko has now broken the record for most Bosnian caps with 113 caps.
Dzeko is also recorded as the top scorer in the history of Bosnian football and Herzegovina. Currently he has scored 59 goals in various competitions for his country.
