Andrew Wiggins on Wednesday has signed a new five-year contract with Minnesota Timberwolves that will see him stay in Minnesota until at least the winter of 2022.
Minnesota Timberwolves owner Glen Taylor in last summer said that he was ready to pay $ 150 million for the shooting guard, but that he will have to improve and contribute to the team in a significant way.
“Andrew is one of the best young players in the NBA. He has the talent and work ethic needed to become even better and to be a mainstay of our association for several years.” Taylor said.
“He seems to have the ability and so the only thing it would be is for some reason he didn’t work hard enough to obtain the skill sets. That’s what you’re asking him to commit to.” Taylor added.
The 22-year-old shooting guard maintained an average of 23.6 points per game last season in the league and has tighten himself as one of the building blocks of an up-and-coming franchise.
“I am very excited to continue my career with the Timberwolves. I like to be here, the fans and organisation have supported me since my first day in Minnesota.” Wiggins said.
“I like everyone from the trainers to the coaches to the front office, my team-mates. I love everybody. They’ve treated me with nothing but nice since I got here.” Wiggins added.
First overall pick in the NBA draft in 2014, the Canadian was selected by the Cleveland Cavaliers. Wiggins was traded to Timberwolves in 2014, following a three-team deal that sent Kevin Love to Cleveland.
“And they were the first people who gave me the opportunity to play the NBA after I got traded from Cleveland and they welcomed me with open arms so this is where I wanted to be at.” Wiggins said.
“We’ve had good times in the last three seasons, but the best is yet to come. I look forward to doing well with my team-mates and club management to bring this team into the playoffs.” he added.

The Timberwolves head coach Tom Thibodeau on the other hand said he really satisfied with Wiggins’ progress so far and expected the star to contribute more for the team.
