Marquez extends Honda contract by two years

Honda continued its relationship with four-time MotoGP world champion Marc Marquez. It is great pleasure that Honda Racing Corporation (HRC), confirms that the Spaniard will remain a part of the Repsol Honda MotoGP team’s rider line-up for the MotoGP world championship season of 2019 and 2020.

With 12 brilliant podiums and 6 strong GP victories in the 2017 season, Honda is confident in their partnership with Marquez and looks forward to being a serious title for 2018 and the following season.

“I’m excited to continue to race for Honda’s factory team in the MotoGP class. I’m proud to race as a member of the Honda family, and I appreciate how Honda and the team always do their best to provide me with everything I need.” Marquez said after extended his contract.

“I would also like to thank everyone who has given me such warm support over the years. The first two official tests went well, and with my contract renewed, I can concentrate on racing in the new season.” he added.

The reigning champion connected hi MotoGP journey with Honda in 2010 season in the 125cc championship and in the Moto2 class in 2012. He has taken the premier class world championship title four times since his debut in 2013.

“I am very happy that Marc Marquez will continue to ride for our factory team. He has consistently pushed himself to the limit and matured as a rider, and given Honda many title.” HRC president, Yoshishige Nomura said on Marquez’s contract extension.

“We were able to announce the contract renewal at such an early stage due to our mutual trust, and our common passion for racing. I am certain that we can provide an environment for him to concentrate on the final tests on Qatar this week and in the lead-up to the opening round, and that we can start the 2018 season strongly.” Nomura added.

In November, KTM CEO Stefan Pierer has revealed that their MotoGP goal for 2019 is to acquire the service of Honda’s Marquez.

However, the Austrian manufacturer has set its sights on Yamaha Tech3 rider Johann Zarco as a team-mate for Pol Espargaro.

“Marc is undoubtedly a great champion, but if he turned out not to be competitive with the KTM, it could only be the fault of the bike.” Pierer said.
