Lewis Hamilton: “I felt really good today”

Defending champion Lewis Hamilton has been in superb form after claiming a second successive F1 win at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya, Spain, on Sunday.

The Brit is currently sitting on the top in F1 standings with 98 points, 17 points clear of Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel after winning by 20 seconds in Barcelona. He has broken a new ex-Ferrari driver Michael Schumacher record now and won 41 races from pole.

“I felt really good today. I don’t know it looked but it felt special, it felt strong. The guys have been working so hard back in the factory and here and it’s good to see.” Hamilton said.

“Our temperature was up and down, clouds were in the air, but once I got going and got a good start it was great. After that I was really surprised they didn’t have the pace to keep up with me.” Hamilton added.

The 33-year-old F1 driver has had to be patient this year. He keeps waiting until the race in Azerbaijan to grab his first win of the campaign.

“I’m nearly in the groove, I think. I know it sounds weird but today is the closest I think I’ve been but there are still areas that weren’t quite perfect.” Hamilton said.

“It was definitely the closest it’s been to some of the performances we had last season. the more confident I am the better the pace is.

“To get the one-two, it’s such a great result for everyone. Monaco is going to be really tough. The Red Bulls are really fast in the final sector and it’s going to be really hard to beat them.” Hamilton added.

Mercedes has dominated the Red Bull and Ferrari in Barcelona without any doubt. They were fast in mediums and soft. It must be said that the difference between the compounds brought by Pirelli was quite small.

“It was easy enough to make one stop here. And the tyres were very similar but we had already told Charlie Whiting. We’re talking a little bit about Charlie’s options for next season, to make the tires a bit more different, to make them more fit for the race.” Hamilton said.

“It was just so difficult to overtake. I was on cooler tires than Max Verstappen. But to follow another car on this track – especially on this circuit – is even more difficult than in the past.

“In addition, there was a lot of wind, so as soon as you’re four seconds behind, you start to feel it and be affected.” Hamilton added.
