French Open 2018: Simona Halep beats Sloane Stephens in final

Simona Halep finally won her first grand slam title after winning the French Open 2018 or better known as Rolland Garros on Saturday (9/6/2018). In the Final, Simona Halep beat American 10th rank Sloane Stephens in three sets.

In the first set, the world number one woman tennis player was getting fierce resistance from the world’s 10th rank. Halep got left behind in the first set 3-6, Halep played well in the next two games with a score of 6-4 and 6-1. This victory is so special for Halep because she always lost in three previous Grand finals – to Maria Sharapova in 2014 and Jelena Ostapenko in 2017 – and against Caroline Wozniacki in this year’s Australian Open showpiece.

Halpe became the second Romanian to win the Grand Slam champion title since 40 years ago, the title was once won by compatriot and mentor, Virginia Ruzici at the 1978 French Open. Halep could not help but feel happy after winning the title.

The 26-year-old herself admitted it was not easy to conquer her American opponent. She even admitted was overwhelmed facing fierce opposition opponent.

“Honestly, I did not think [could be champion]. In the last game, I can not even breathe anymore, I just try to do everything I can, of course it is amazing that happens now,” said Halep.

“I’ve been dreaming of this since I first played tennis,” the Romanian added. Shortly after securing the victory, Halep threw her racket up and covered his face with both hands and cried happily.

Meanwhile, Stephens herself was not too disappointed despite falling to win the Grand Slam title for the second time. As known, Stephens had champion in the event United States Open 2017.

“It’s not the trophy I want, but it’s still beautiful. Congratulations on your first Grand Slam title [Halep] and it looks good to you, I do not want to lose except for the world number one,” Stephens told Halep.

Stephens had to walk through the net to be able to congratulate Halep. Halep also received a standing ovation from spectators who were present while crying celebrating victory with her family and team coach.

Halep almost won the 2018 Australian Open champion in January. However, she failed to win the trophy after losing to Caroline Wozniacki in the final with a score of 6-7, 6-3, and 4-6.
