World Cup 2018: Uruguay beat Portugal 2-1 as Edinson Cavani’s superb double

Uruguay national team managed to beat the Portuguese national team 2-1 in the Round of 16 World Cup 2018 at the Fisht Olympic Stadium. Two goals winning Uruguay scored by Edinson Cavani in the 7th minute and (62′). While a goal from Portugal scored by Pepe in the 55th minute.

With this result, Uruguay qualify for the quarter-finals. The Sky Blue will face France, who beat finalist of the 2014 World Cup, Argentina, with a score of 4-3 on Saturday (30/06/2018).

From statistical data, Portugal far ahead with 62 percent ball possession and 13 opportunities in which five of them on target.  Meanwhile Uruguay play more effectively. The reason, only have three shots on target, they can get two goals.

This match runs with medium tempo for two rounds. Uruguay fast scoring in the 7th minute. Luis Suarez’s cross to the far post was successfully  completed by Cavani with a header. Score 1-0 to Uruguay lasted until halftime.

Entering the second half, Portugal took the initiative to attack. The equalizing goal was obtained in the 55th minute. Through a corner kick-off scheme, Raphael Guerreiro’s pass was completed by Pepe who was out of control. Former Real Madrid defender is heading the ball nested on the right side of Uruguay goalkeeper. This is the first time Uruguay goalkeeper conceded in the 2018 World Cup.

Uruguay back ahead in the 62nd minute thanks to a beautiful goal by Cavani. Receiving horizontal feedback from Rodrigo Bentancur, Cavani fired a shot that can not be reached by Rui Patricio. After this goal, Uruguay play more defensive to keep the advantage.

In the 69th minute, Portugal almost just re-equalized when there was chaos in front of Uruguay’s goal. The ball was detached from Fernando Muslera’s catch and fell to the feet of Bernardo Silva. Unfortunately, Silva failed to direct the ball into the goal that has been abandoned by Muslera.

In the last 10 minutes, Portugal locked up the Uruguay defense. However, the Uruguay defense is so tight because of piling up nine players there so no goals are created. Score 2-1 for Uruguay’s advantage lasted until the long whistle. As a result, the winner of two World Cup titles to step into the Round of Eight.
