Denis Shapovalov defeats Jeremy Chardy and moves to the second round of Wimbledon

Canada’s Denis Shapovalov on Tuesday through to second round of Wimbledon after win over France’s Jeremy Chardy, 6-3, 3-6, 7-5, 6-4 .

Shapovalov scored his third break in the game in the 10th game of the fourth inning to make his first match point a reality. Thanks to this win, he now has at least one victory on his record in each of the four Grand Slam tournaments.

In his next match, the 19-year-old will face another Frenchman, Benoit Paire, who defeated Taiwan’s Jason Jung in three sets earlier Tuesday.

The young Canadian had also managed the only break in the third set, on his seventh break point of the set. Before this duel, Chardy had emerged victorious from 12 of his last 14 encounters played on grass.

Eugenie Bouchard, meanwhile, she defeated British’s Gabriella Taylor 6-0, 4-6, 6-3, in a first-round woman’s match. She will face No.17 seed Ashleigh Barty in the second round.

Bouchard was forced into the qualification draw this year after seeing her ranking fall down No. 191 before the tournament. The 24-year-old returned to Grand Slam main draw action at Wimbledon after failing to qualify for the French Open.

“I feel a lot more comfortable on the court. I feel a little bit more like myself. You know, I have always deep down had the belief, and it’s about, in the tough moments of the match, keeping that belief. I have that more and more now. Just trying to keep progressing.” Bouchard said.

“Yeah, I felt great support. I saw a lot of Canadians flags. I got mobbed after the match, pretty much. But it’s a mob of love, so I liked it.

“I think Barty is playing great. I think she loves grass. I really want to raise my level and try and play my best tennis against her and see what happens.” the Canadian added.

Vasek Pospisil on the other hand, he lost in four sets 6-4, 3-6, 6-2, 6-3 to Kazakh Mikhail Kukushkin. He was able to ignore the 12 aces of his rival to earn his place in the second round against Rafael Nadal. The 30-year old had only three aces but did not commit a double foul while Pospisil had seven.
