Georges St-Pierre keen to fight the winner of UFC 229 between Conor McGregor and Khabib Nurmagomedov

Former UFC welterweight champion Georgees St-Pierre has opened to the idea of facing the eventual winner of the much anticipated fight between the Irish Conor McGregor and the Russian Khabib Nurmagomedov in the main event of UFC 229.

“I would be interested in this fight. It would be a win-win situation. It would allow me to leave an even stronger mark on my sport and the paycheck would be attractive. It’s going to be a big fight.” St-Pierre said.

“However, I fought in welterweight and I gave up the title. I fought in the middle and I gave up the title. I don’t think the UFC will let me fight for the lightweight title. They will be afraid that I will leave another division in ruin.” GSP added.

St-Pierre, who swung the scales at 185 pounds during the official weigh-in of his last fight, is not closed to the idea of going down to 155 pounds for his return to competition.

The Canadian fighter believed that Nurmagomedov must be established as a favorite for the fight that will take place on October 6 in Las Vegas.

“I know Khabib, I’ve met him many times and I know he’s bigger when he’s not in training camp. His weighs about 195 pounds while currently I don’t even do 185 pounds.” St-Pierre said.

“But I think I could go down to 155. I’ve never tried it and I’m not a big fan of big weight cuts. Would they let me try it? I do not know. Another title would be good for my CV, but even without it, it would be a big fight.

“If I had to bet my house, I would choose Khabib. He never lost, while Conor has some defeats. And he suffered those defeats on the ground, which is one of Khabib’s strengths.

“However, Khabib has a tendency to start his slow-fighting and he is cashing a lot. He did not look good at the beginning of his fight against Michael Johnson and he has trouble measuring the distance well. But as soon as he takes you to close combat, he is very good. So I put the odds in his favor, maybe 60-40.” St-Pierre added.

McGregor will take on Nurmagomedov in his long-awaited return to the Octagon on October 6. He hasn’t fought since claiming the lightweight title 20 months ago in the main event of UFC 205.
