Olympique Lyonnais informs of an agreement with Real Madrid for the transfer of its striker Mariano Diaz for € 33m including € 3m in incentives related to European qualifying for Real Madrid from which will be deducted 35% of the capital gain achieved by the Gones on this transfer, in accordance with the conditions defined last year with Madrid.
While FC Seville was on the brink of recovery, La Maison Blanche decided to activate a matching clause reserving a right of priority in case of transfer agreement from another club.
Diaz played his first full season at the highest level, scoring 21 goals including 18 in Ligue 1 and delivering seven assists in all competitions for Lyon. Following a tactical setup after Nabil Fekir’s injury came back in April, he lost his place.
Diaz joined Madrid in 2012 from Badalona and rose up the ranks before making his debut against Celta Vigo under Zinedine Zidane during the 2016/17 season. The 25-year-old made 14 appearances for Los Blancos that season, with five goals in all competitions.
Madrid coach Julen Lopetegui reportedly called Mariano, who was said to be very close to a deal with Sevilla, to explain what was expected of him on his return to the club if he was interested.
Lyon president Jean-Michel Aulas revealed that the club will earn 15% of the added value of a possible Diaz’s future transfer.
“Olympique Lyonnais will earn 15% of the added value of a possible future transfer of Mariano Diaz. The striker knows Real Madrid to have entered the first time in 2011, without making his hole with the first team, remaining confined within the reserve team. The player is not resentful, we cannot say no to Real Madrid,” Aulas said.
“Mariano told me he wanted to go to Madrid before passing on the Sevilla offer. I told Florentino and he told me that he wasn’t the player he was looking for. And then the offer came in.” Aulas added,

Initially, the striker had agreed to a transfer to Seville. But a clause included in the transaction of the previous year, indicated that Madrid had the right to align on an offer of a competing club if he wanted to recover Mariano.
