Former IBF middleweight champion David Lemieux is keen for another battle with the new WBC and WBA middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez in the near future.
Canelo got what he waited for, the Mexican champion won majority decision over Kazakhstan Gennady Golovkin in intense rematch on Saturday night, at T-Mobile Arena, Las Vegas. One judge scored it level at 114-114, with the other two favoring Canelo 115-113.
“The biggest fight of the year you know Canelo and Golovkin rematch to be able to be undercard. Big congratulations to Canelo, who fought an excellent fight tonight against Golovkin in the rematch. I thought it was a fair play that he won the fight.” Lemieux said.
“It was a great fight and also, Canelo is someone I’m extremely interested in. So hopefully I’ll have a fight against him in the near future. Hopefully the fans will demand it.” Lemieux added.
Both Canelo and Lemieux are promoted by Golden Boy Promotions, which means the duel is easy to be made in the future.
Lemieux needed less than one round to destroy Gary “Spike” O’Sullivan on Saturday night. Ireland’s O’Sullivan went down to his gloves and knees after absorbing that brutal blow.
“I was so furious that I felt alone in the ring. When I saw him on the floor unable to stand up, I thought. It’s all over him, all this for that? I prepared for a war for several rounds, and it ended when I placed my first hook.” Lemieux said.
“When O’Sullivan spoke, I kept everything deep inside me. I rather exploded in the ring. It is not in my nature to disrespect my opponents. I don’t do trash talk.
“Now, I cannot compare myself to the boxer I was when I faced Billy Joe Saunders. Saunders is an excellent technician, but I am physically 100% now.” Lemieux added.

Oscar de Lahoya, meanwhile, insisted a December 15 date available for Canelo’s return. He said Lemieux became the WBA’s mandatory challenger for Canelo’s middleweight title, but that probably will be soon for the Mexican fighter to fight again.
“We have to analyse the situation. We have to talk with Canelo’s team. Obviously there’s a cut. We’ve gotta deal with the doctors, deal with the situation. But it’s a potential fight and he’s a worthy contender.” De La Hoya said.
