“I’m just a baby compared to the success of him (Jose Mourinho) as a coach,” Frank Lampard said the day before the match. Who would have thought, Lampard could defeat his teacher – at Old Trafford too.
Lampard was only about six months as a coach. After completing the course to get a license to train from UEFA, he chose to coach Derby County.
Jose Mourinho has achieved everything as a club coach. He has already conquered several different countries, the Champions League trophy has been won. The Portuguese was one of the most successful coaches of this era.
Tonight at Old Trafford both met for the first time as opposed to the bench. After playing equally strong 2-2 in normal time, Lampard was able to defeat Mourinho. Derby humiliated MU 8-7 in the English League Cup.
Juan Mata made MU’s first goal. But, Harry Wilson and Jack Marriot had made Derby make a comeback and almost won in 90 minutes. MU’s breath was extended Marouane Fellaini scored in the 95th minute. When the penalty shoot-out, MU failed to become a winner.
The defeat was a big blow for MU not only because they played at home and were subject to the Championship Division team. MU dropped quite a lot of the main players since the early minutes. Romelu Lukaku, Jesse Lingard, Nemanja Matic, until Eric Bailly played from the beginning.
Interestingly, Derby even excelled in many ways statistically. The visitors made 16 shots compared to 14. Mastering possession of 53-47, even the total passing of Lampard’s team reached 498, while MU passed 446.
“He made us play with confidence. We know with the ability in the field and show that today. We work together and show as a compact group,” Marriot said flattering Lampard.
Lampard and Mourinho are big stories when talking about Chelsea’s success story. Together they both led the Blues to win the Premier League 2004/2005 and 2005/2006. Lampard, who was a midfielder, instead became Chelsea’s top scorer in the two periods.
Mourinho, who had just come to England at the time, knew exactly how to utilize and maximize Lampard’s abilities. Lampard also won several personal awards at that time. Including being the runner-up of the Ballon d’Or behind Ronaldinho.
Lampard has started taking coaching courses when he controversially defended Manchester City. Although his relationship with Mourinho was reported to have deteriorated, yet they claimed to still communicate with each other at the time.
Before Derby recruited him at the end of the 2017/2018 season, Lampard had an internship at Chelsea as coach of the junior team. Who would have thought, two months after starting his full career as a coach, Lampard met Mourinho and won.
In his debut year as a manager, Lampard’s performance was okay. They are currently ranked sixth with 16 points, but only 2 points clear of Leeds United at the top of the Championship. His record so far is 5 wins 1 draw and 3 losses. Victory over Manchester United at Old Trafford is certainly one of the biggest achievements so far.
“Personally, he is a manager who has had a huge influence in my career twice, but especially at the first opportunity. I fully respect him.”
“What he has gotten as a manager doesn’t need to be discussed anymore, it’s all in the history books. The wins he won, the titles he collected, the teams he gave success and he managed. (Meanwhile) I just “Baby in the managerial world, so my path is still long,” Lampard said the day before the match.
