Juan Mata has declared his “love” of the Premier League, but he is yet to be handed a new contract by Manchester United. The World Cup winner has been at Old Trafford since January 2014, with David Moyes having snapped him up for £37 million ($47m). Mata has now passed the 200-appearance mark for the club, while his most recent outing saw him reach 50 goals and the same number of assist across English top-flight competition. The Spaniard’s contract expires in the summer but MEN Sport revealed the club have opened talks with Mata’s representatives about keeping him at Old Trafford beyond 2019. Mata is a firm favourite of Jose Mourinho’s and the United boss hailed the No.10 as a ‘proper professional’ for always putting the team first when he has been out of the team this season.
The 30-year-old has stepped up with some big free-kicks from the bench this season, against Newcastle and Juventus, and is back in contention for a spot in the Spain squad. Something he was keen to talk up when asked about his hopes of getting back into Luis Enrique’s plans and extending his stay at United. “Yeah definitely. I’m very much looking forward to be able to come back to the national team,” he told reporters before United’s game against Valencia. “I’m very lucky to play in one of the best generations of Spanish football. I’ve been able to win some important trophies with the national team but my desire and passion to play in the national team is still intact and I think I can bring my football and my experience to the team so hopefully I can make it back and I’m really looking forward to it.
“In terms of the club, all I can say is that I’m happy in Manchester and in England. I’ve been in England for some years now and I’m very happy to be in this incredible club so let’s see what happens but at the moment I’m very happy.”
