Defeated Schalke 7-0, Manchester City qualified for the quarter-finals

Manchester City made it to the Champions League quarter-finals after a 7-0 win over Schalke and made a convincing aggregate 10-2 on Wednesday (3/13).

Manchester City immediately pressed at the beginning. The first threat came from Sergio Aguero with his shot from close range to welcome Raheem Sterling’s pass but the ball still hit the post in the 14th minute. Threat came back from Aguero but the ball can still be secured by goalkeeper Ralf Fahrmann in the 30th minute.

Manchester City’s first goal was in the 35th minute through Sergio Aguero’s penalty. City were awarded a penalty after Bernardo Silva was dropped by Bruma in the forbidden box.  Aguero did the harvest to outwit the Schalke goalkeeper Ralf Faehrmann.

Three minutes after the first goal, Aguero again listed his name on the scoreboard. This goal originated from the penetration of Raheem Sterling on the left side of the Schalke defense.

Sterling then gave heel bait to Aguero. Despite being surrounded by a number of Schalke players, Aguero forced a shot from a tight angle. The successful ball goes into the goal and changes the score to 2-0.

In the 42nd minute, Manchester City were able to increase the advantage to 3-0 through Leroy Sane. Oleksandr Zinchenko’s breakthrough pass made Leroy Sane detached from the back line. Sane coldly fired a shot into the former club’s goal and brought ‘The Citizens’ three goals ahead in the first round. Manchester City still continued the pressure but the 3-0 score for the hosts continued until halftime.

The superiority of three goals in the first half made Manchester City go through the second half calmly. Sane failed to take advantage of his chances in the 51st minute after his shot was wide. Pep Guardiola’s squad managed to increase the score to 4-0 through a goal by Raheem Sterling in the 56th minute.

Sterling fired hard after receiving Sane’s cross from the right side of the Schalke defense.

After leading 4-0, Guardiola decided to pull out David Silva, Sergio Aguero and Aymeric Laporte. Despite making a number of substitutions, Manchester City are still able to maintain pressure on the Schalke goal. That was then the fifth goal which was scored by Bernardo Silva in the 71st minute.

Not satisfied there, Phil Foden enlarged City’s advantage to 6-0 through his left foot shot in the 78th minute.

Gabriel Jesus finally closed Manchester City’s goal party to 7-0 after scoring against Schalke through his right foot shot. The score lasted until the end of the match and made sure City escaped with a 10-2 aggregate.
