Sergiy Derevyanchenko’s trainer Andre Rozier has claimed Gennady Golovkin (39-1-1, 35 KOs) last match with Steve Rolls was just ridiculous.
Former middleweight champion Golovkin enjoyed his fight after knocked out Toronto’s Rolls in the fourth round on June 8 at Madison Square Garden.
“That was just ridiculous,” Rozier said. “Honestly for GGG to fight Roll was like 14 steps back. And although he didn’t attack him early, when he did it was over.
“So, it was almost like, ‘Let me hold off a minute. I don’t want people to think it’s a mismatch.’ But from the beginning, when the fight was announced, I was like, ‘What? He’s nowhere in this league. Why is he here?’ I’m a realist about it.
“People might fake the funk, but I’m real about it. That made no sense.” Rozier added.
Rozier thinks that Golovkin has slowed down and lack of knockouts in his recent big fights that why he thinks the Kazakhs’s opponent were better.
“In my opinion, it seemed that way. Golovkin has said. ‘I let the guy work a little bit, so the people can get excited. ‘He has said that before.” Rozier added.
“This was the perfect opportunity for that to be the case. And then once he let his hands go, the fight was over.” Rozier added.
When asked about Derevyanchenko fight against Golovkin, he expects the Ukrainian icon to give GGG a much more difficult fight when they face on October 5 at Madison Square in New York for the vacant IBF world middleweight title.
The vacant IBF world middleweight title was stripped from Saul “Cenelo” Alvarez after he failed to fight Derevyanchenko earlier this month.
“I take nothing for granted. I think that we have to be prepared for the best GGG that comes, and that’s why we’re working as hard as we are right now.” Rozier said.
Golovkin is reportedly keen to fight WBA and WBC champion Alvarez once again. The pair met at the end of the 2018 when they fought to a controversial win for Alvarez at T-Mobile Arena.
