Mourinho, who is no longer special at Tottenham

Tottenham Hotspur’s performance under Jose Mourinho is no better than during the time at the hands of Mauricio Pochettino who was fired on November 19, 2019.

There has been no significant progress shown by The Lilywhites since Mourinho coached the club on November 20.

In 10 matches in the English League, Mourinho brought Tottenham to five wins, with four losing. Including when humiliated by Liverpool 0-1 at home.

With these results the North London club can also only move up six ranks from the 14th position since Pochettino left until now in eighth position.

Premier League 2019/2020 season is still long. However, the report card was not ideal for Mourinho, who was full of experience in the Premier League and who won two Champions League titles.

In fact, the 2-1 victory over Middlesbrough in the FA Cup was the first for Tottenham in the last five matches in all competitions.

Previously Tottenham were consecutive offset by Norwich City’s (2-2) side losing to Southampton (0-1), being held by Middlesbrough (1-1), and losing 0-1 to Liverpool. Tottenham have also been humiliated by another London club, Chelsea, 0-2 at home.

The report cards made Mourinho, who has the nickname The Special One, no longer special. Note that Mourinho is no longer special actually has happened in a number of clubs before.

Manchester United lost 1-3 to Tottenham last season at Old Trafford. The Red Devils also eliminated the Championship Division club Derby County from the League Cup last season.

When at Chelsea, the Blues lost 1-2 to Crystal Palace at Stamford Bridge in the 2015/2016 season. Bournemouth’s bottom team also beat them 1-0 in London.

Mourinho, who was born in Setubal, is also like bringing Tottenham backwards. Tottenham is now experiencing a transition of playing style from high pressing in the Pochettino era to a conservative direction that tends to be pragmatic with Mourinho.

The change in style of play was in line with Pochettino’s goal and conceding statistics with Mourinho which were also slightly different. In the hands of Mourinho, now 56, Tottenham have an average of 1.8 goals per game with a goal of 1.6 per game.

Whereas while still coached by Pochettino, the average goal of Tottenham was slightly better with 2 goals per match. But have a worse average conceded (1.7 goals) than in the Mourinho era.

Another difference that occurs between Mourinho and Pochettino this season is the use of players. Pochettino played 30 names this season, while Mourinho only used 28 different players.

The presence of Mourinho makes some names rarely play, but there are also more trusted by the former Man United coach.

In Pochettino’s time, midfielder Christian Eriksen played 14 matches in all competitions, whereas when Mourinho was present, the Danish player only played 11 times.

In contrast, Ryan Sessegnon, who twice played with Pochettino this season, has now collected 6 matches with Mourinho.

Midfielder Moussa Sissoko who won a lot of trust from Pochettino also had fewer opportunities to play with Mourinho.

However, Mourinho’s report card at Tottenham this season is still better than Pochettino at the beginning of the season.

Outside of a 2-1 win over Middlesbrough in the FA Cup, Transfermarkt noted the Portuguese coach had 1.54 points per game from 13 matches. That figure is still better than Pochettino who won 1.24 points per match from 17 matches at the start of the season.

Overall, Mourinho’s winning percentage at Tottenham is also far better than Pochettino.

Of the 14 matches Mourinho has a winning percentage of 50 percent after 7 wins, 2 draws and 5 defeats.

Meanwhile, Pochettino only has 29.4 percent of wins from 17 matches with details of 5 wins, 6 draws and 6 defeats.
