Team Director Williams has responded to the coronavirus outbreak that is currently affecting the world and impacting sporting events and Formula 1.
So far the 2020 Chinese Grand Prix, which had been scheduled for April 17-19, has been postponed as a result of the novel coronavirus outbreak which started in the country and is starting to reach in number several other countries around the world including Vietnam, Bahrain, Italy and France.
The question of maintaining certain GPs arises concerning several countries and the FIA declared that it carefully follows all the directives given by the States concerned.
Claire, Director of the eponymous team, addressed this subject at a promotional event organized by Rokit, title sponsor of the British team. She admits that Formula 1, as a world sport, has a lot of responsibilities in the face of this event.
“As a world circus, we have a lot of responsibilities. We must react to the latest events with lightning speed.” Claire said.
“We are in an incredibly serious situation. Formula 1 is a world sport. Not only do thousands of professionals travel the world, but we also have many fans who travel to the Grands Prix.
“The effects of the coronavirus are a moving target. We are in constant contact with Formula One Management and the FIA. Of course, we adhere to their guidelines. But the situation is literally changing from hour to hour.” Claire added.
Travel for F1 personnel is subject to more and more constraints. However, Claire said she trusts F1 will ensure the safety of everyone traveling to the opening races.
“Everyone in a Formula 1 team wants to do what they are passionate about, that is, to participate in car racing. But the bottom line is that people are safe. We need to do this thoughtfully.” Claire said.
“It’s not just about the people who travel for us, we’re also talking about an incredible amount of material that’s on the way, whether it’s sea or air freight. Not to mention the cost of it all.” she added.
