Roger Federer: “I Never Lost Motivation”

Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic have been so good in recent years that the trio have won 56 of the last 67 grand slams.

The Swiss icon Federer leads the way with 20, while the Serbian icon Djokovic is catching up with 17 following his win at the Australian Open in February.

“When you look back and you look at the 4 and a half or five years that I didn’t win a slam, people almost make it sound like I was playing terrible. I had a tough year in 2013 with a lot of back pain from Indian Wells on throughout the summer,” Federer said.

“Honestly it was I think the time of Novak and Rafa also was keeping a lock on the French Open as we all know. So it was difficult to slide in a special victory. I think I was able to keep pushing because I believed I was very close and I had a good team and I never lost motivation.” Federer added.

Federer tennis season officially commenced on 3 January, 2016, with the start of the Brisbane International, and ended on 8 July 2016, with a loss in the semifinals of the Wimbledon. This season saw the 20-grand slam champion suffer from a knee injury which sidelined him for the majority of the year.

“I think I was able to keep pushing because I believed I was very close and I had a good team and I never lost motivation. And I enjoyed the practice.” Federer said.

“I was able to keep going and then the injury came 2016 and then that was a tough year for me. And I obviously had thoughts if this is going to be the end or not,” he added.

Due to the coronavirus outbreak, the ATP has extended the suspension of the ATP Tour through to July 31. A further update on the ATP Tour calendar is expected in mid-June.
