WBC super middleweight champion David Benavidez set to return in August, 2020. However, has called out Saul “Canelo” Alvarez.
“I have a title that Canelo wants, the WBC. If he gives me this fight, it would be an honor for me. And if he gives me this opportunity, I’ll be ready. I think I have what it takes to beat him: I’m young, strong, fast, and I think I can beat him,” Benavidez said.
“It’s a fight I want and if he gives me that fight, he’s going to have to expect a war, and it’s a fight people want to see. Boxing will be a winner with this fight.” Benavidez added.
Benavidez will now potentially have to fight behind closed doors, meaning the event will lose out on millions of dollars in ticket revenue.
For is part, Canelo holds version of titles at 160 and 168 pounds while he vacated the 175-pound belt he won last fall by knocking out Sergey Kovalev in last November.
Canleo fought in the super middleweight at the end of 2018, when he beat Briton Rocky Fielding for the WBC regular title. He still holds the WBA regular title at that weight, and the WBA middleweight title.
The 29-year-old pound-for-pound star is scheduled on paper to fight on September 12. However, due to the fact that he still hasn’t found an opponent, he could see his fight postponed at a later date.
Canelo confirmed he wants trilogy with Gennady “GGG” Golovkin in last October. The two boxers first crossed paths on September 16, 2017. They had to settle for a split draw after trading blows for the full 12 rounds.
On September 15, 2018, Canelo emerged as the winner via majority decision in the second fight. He scored 115-113 from the first two judges while the third judge scored a 114-114 draw.
