Andrea Pirlo once gave advice to his former team, Juventus about maximizing the role of superstar Cristiano Ronaldo at the club in 2019. Unexpectedly, a year later, Pirlo became Juventus coach.
Sky Sport Italia reports that Juventus’ decision to appoint Pirlo comes from President Andrea Agnelli. Before being trusted to train the first team, Pirlo was appointed as coach of the Juventus U-23 team at the end of last July. However, in less than a month, Pirlo leveled up to become the coach of the team’s main squad nicknamed the Old Lady.
Andrea Pirlo signs a two-year contract until 30 June 2022 as Juventus coach. Meanwhile, launched from La Gazzetta dello Sport, the former AC Milan and Juve player will receive a salary of 2 million euros per year.
The announcement was made by Juventus on Sunday (9/8/2020), or several hours after the club kicked Maurizio Sarri. Although he managed to bring Juve to win the 2019-2020 Serie A, Sarri failed to bring the Bianconeri to the stage of the Champions League.
Juve have just been eliminated by Lyon in the last 16 of the Champions League. No doubt, Pirlo will face a tough task at Juventus. Juve have ambitions to win the Champions League as the last title they won was in the 1995-1996 season.
Well, coincidentally, a year ago, Pirlo once gave advice so that Juventus could win the Champions League. “I think Juventus need an Isco. Juventus are at a different level, but they must win the Champions League,” said Pirlo in an interview.
Pirlo, who used to play as a regista, advised Juve to buy a quality midfielder to compete in the Champions League, and Isco (Real Madrid midfielder) is one of them. “Juve lacked quality in midfield,” he said.
He also spoke up about maximizing the role of Cristiano Ronaldo at Juve. “They bought Ronaldo but they don’t know how to get the ball for Ronaldo,” Pirlo said. Now, Pirlo can no longer provide advice to Juventus, the club he defended in the 2011-2015 period.
In fact, he himself now determines the game and the direction of Juventus’ goals. How will Andrea Pirlo’s career path as Juventus coach be?
