Willian has finalised his move to Arsenal from Chelsea on a three-year deal. The Brazilian midfielder joins the Gunners on a free transfer.
“We’ve been watching him for a few months. We had a clear intention to strengthen the attacking midfield and the winger; he is a player who gives us a lot of versatility, he can play in three or four different positions.” Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta said.
“He has experience in everything in the world of football but he still has the ambition to come here and help bring the club in his place. I was really impressed with all the discussions I had with him and how much he wanted to come.” Arteta added.
Willian has turned down the offer of a two-year extension with Chelsea, where he had played since 2013. He helped Chelsea win two Premier League titles, an FA Cup title and the 2019 Europa League title, where the Blues beat Arsenal 4-1 in Baku.
With none goals and seven assists, the 2019-20 season was Willian’s most productive EPL campaign in terms of goal involvements.
The former Corinthians player was however forced to watch when Arsenal beat Chelsea 2-1 in this month’s FA Cup final as he missed the game due to a problem with the ankle.
“Arsenal is one of the biggest clubs in the world and because of the new project with Arteta. I think this club deserves to shine again. I want to be a part of this project, to be part of the Arsenal family, it’s amazing, I’m very happy to do that.” Willian said.
Willian follows his compatriot David Luiz moving from Stamford Bridge to Arsenal in last August. The 32-year-old also will wear the number 12 jersey, and will join with his teammates in a couple weeks.
