Bayern Munich striker Robert Lewandowski has the right to win the Ballon d’Or award, which has been dominated by Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo for the past decade.
It is undeniable that Lewandowski had a fantastic year with Munich this season. Three prestigious titles, including the Champions League, were won with Die Roten.
Not only that, the Polish bomber also successfully won the Golden Shoe or top scorer in the Bundesliga, DFB Pokal and Champions League.
These three conditions should be enough to make Lewandowski the winner of the Ballon d’Or. Unfortunately, the award that was initiated by Football France has been canceled since the Covid-19 pandemic was rampant.
Lewandowski was ultimately not entitled to the Ballon d’Or trophy, which has been dominated by Messi (6) and Ronaldo (5). The two megastars appeared under-performing and failed to lead their respective teams to the Champions League final this season.
Many parties consider Lewandowski deserving of the annual award. Even the supporters were busy signing the petition for the Ballon d’Or to be given to Lewandowski.
In an interview with Polish media, Sportowe Facty, Lewandowski did not hesitate to claim to be a player who deserves the Best Player award.
“Myself,” said Lewandowski in response to the question of who deserves the Ballon d’Or award this season.
“We won everything we could with Bayern. I was also the top scorer in all competitions: Bundesliga, German Cup and Champions League,” explained Lewandowski.
“I understand that the pressure from other players may be greater. But, won’t every footballer win the Ballon d’Or with the achievements I have achieved,” he said.
Lewandowski, who successfully collected 15 goals in the Champions League this season, should be able to break the dominance of Messi and Ronaldo. However, that opportunity vanished because the award had been removed due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
