Ateletico Madrid have completed the signing of La Liga rivals Barcelona forward Luis Suarez in a deal worth an initial 5.5m euro.
The Uruguayan striker has signed a two-year contract at the Camp Nou and will join up with Diego Siomone’s squad for the 2020-21 season.
Suarez had one more year to run on the contract he signed with Blaugrana but Barcelona new manager Ronald Koeman has insisted that Suarez would not form part of his plans in this season. The Dutchman
“I feel I’m capable of continuing to compete in this league,” Suarez said.
“When Barca told me they weren’t counting on me, there were many calls, many offers, but I was able to go to a team that can compete as equals with two great teams like Barcelona and real Madrid. I had no doubts.” Suarez added.
Suarez joined Barcelona from Liverpool in 2014 and scored 197 goals in 283 appearances. During his time at the club, Suarez won La Liga titles, four Copa del Reys, the Champions League, and the European Super Cup.
The 33-year-old striker has been heavily linked with a move to Juventus couple weeks ago but delays in obtaining Italian citizenship put the brakes on a potential deal.
Atletico manager Simeone on the other hand, he has never hidden his admiration for all-action Suarez, who has joined his new club.
“I could not speak ill of Luis Suarez, he is extraordinary. He is a marvelous player, tremendous, extraordinary, strong, aggressive, and intense. He assists and scores from all over the pitch.” Simeone said.
With his arrival at Atletico, Suarez takes another step forward in his career with the goal of consolidating his place as one of the best players in world.
