Fernando Alonso, who will make his comeback in F1 in 2021 with the Alpine Formula 1 team, was fortunate enough to be able to fight on the track in his career against seven-time world champion Michael Schumacher, as well as six-time world champion Lewis Hamilton.
When Alonso asked which of the two was more difficult to beat on the track, the Spaniard said: “Difficult, they are different eras and different cars with different levels of performance.”
“But I remember Michael as a tough driver to beat, with great talent. He had that little something. Lewis is very good and is the best of his generation. But he did not win the world championship with McLaren when he was Jenson Button’s teammate.
“At Mercedes, Nico Rosberg also won a world championship. Michael never had such things, he always won. For me, Michael is one step ahead.” Alonso added.
The Spaniard on the other hand, also commented on the situation of Sebastian Vettel, who is about to leave Ferrari without having win any title with the Italian team.
“We all come to Ferrari with a lot of expectations. They are the most legendary team in Formula 1. It is special to drive for Ferrari.” Alonso said.
“Even though I didn’t win the title, it was a very positive experience for me. I think Sebastian will also have fond memories of Ferrari, although he did not become world champion with them.
“I think we both lacked the right car and the technical skills at the right time. When you sign with Ferrari you think you can win the world championship. After four titles, Vettel thought probably thought he could win another with Ferrari.
“But sometimes you are unlucky when the time is right and the opportunities pass. That’s why in my career I tried not to focus only on F1 and, for example, I drove at the 24 Hours of Le Mans and tried to win everything that could be won.” he added.
