Verstappen: 2021 team mate “doesn’t really matter to me”

Albon adn Verstappen at Red Bull

Max Verstappen thinks the gap between Mercedes and Red Bull is huge. Therefore, he thinks it “does not really matter” who Red Bull chose besides him for 2021.

Alexander Albon came as a replacement to Pierre Gasly, both were taken on board through Scuderia AlphaTauri Formula 1 team. However, he failed to impress the Red Bull, which is currently evaluating drivers for 2021.

Albon is currently struggling to perform this year. He managed to find himself only once at podium through out the season, whereas Verstappen managed 9. Thai driver scored only single point in the last three races.

Christian Horner, Red Bull F1 boss, showed team’s commitment to Albon for the complete year of 2020. But he was transparent about 2021. He wanted Anglo-Thai driver to “justify that there is no need to look at any other alternative”.

Horner apprised that the team would not limiting itself to its driver pool. Rather, if need be to replace Albon for 2021, the team will be open for all the available options. This makes Nico Hulkenberg and Sergio Perez top candidates for a potential replacement.

Verstappen shared his views regarding the seat for 2021. He did not seemed interested in the matter, because he thinks deficiency lies somewhere else.

“In the end, it’s not up to me,” Verstappen said.

“I don’t make that decision. Of course they ask me for my opinion, but in the end it doesn’t really matter to me at the moment. So we’ll just wait and see.”

Albon could not perform with his RB16 through out the season with an exception. Verstappen on the other hand has been struggling, but currently holds third position on drivers standing.

Verstappen wanted the team to concentrate more on closing the gap between itself and Mercedes.

“I can fine-tune the car for myself, but especially at the moment, we’re not good enough to compete in the championship, so it doesn’t really matter,” Verstappen said.

“But if you are close to Mercedes where you can do some things with strategy, it is nice to have a second driver there. But that is not an issue at the moment.”

Last weekend, Albon finished 12th with no points and the Dutchman found himself on third position. Although, experienced team mates like Hulkenberg or Perez could help the Dutchman and team. However, Verstappen does not feel the need of it anymore.

“I did [need an experienced team-mate] when I entered Formula 1,” Verstappen said.

“You don’t know so many things and you haven’t tried so much, you don’t have so much experience.

“But I think now, after five or six years, that’s OK. I don’t need anyone for that.”
