Suzuki Ecstar racer, Joan Mir, is considered to be the 2020 MotoGP world champion even though he has never won a race this season. This opinion was expressed by Andrea Dovizioso (Ducati) and also Jack Miller (Pramac Racing) after seeing the current MotoGP schedule and standings.
Joan Mir is currently at the top of the MotoGP riders’ standings with a collection of 137 points, 14 points ahead of Fabio Quartararo (Petronas Yamaha SRT) who is in second place. This fact is very interesting because Joan Mir has never won a race in the 11 series that have been held this season. On the other hand, Quartararo is by far the most winning collection in MotoGP 2020, which is three times.
Consistency is the key to Joan Mir’s success at being at the top of the 2020 MotoGP rider standings. Of the 11 series, Joan Mir has been on the podium six times, the most of all other MotoGP riders.
Seeing this consistency, Dovizioso assessed that Joan Mir does not need to take risks on the three remaining 2020 MotoGP races to become world champion. “I think winning is no longer important for Joan Mir,” said Dovizioso, quoted from the Motorsport website, Tuesday (3/11/2020).
“MotoGP this season is very strange for several reasons. In the end, getting as many points as possible is the most important thing to become world champion,” said Dovizioso. “I know all riders want to win the race. However, that is not the main factor to become world champion. So, I don’t think Joan Mir should take the risk of winning the remaining three races for the world title,” Dovizioso added.
A similar opinion was expressed by Jack Miller. Seeing Joan Mir’s performance this season, Jack Miller remembered the former Spanish racer, Emilio Alzamora. In the 1999 season, Emilia Alzamora managed to become world champion in the 125 cc class without winning a single race.
Jack Miller now thinks Joan Mir only needs to maintain consistency in the last three series and doesn’t need to risk winning races if he wants to become world champion. “Maybe we will see another Emilio Alzamora if the situation this season continues until the end,” said Jack Miller.
“I think Joan Mir does not need to take risks in a situation like now. I think Suzuki is the fastest this season. If not the fastest, maybe Suzuki is the most consistent. Joan Mir and Suzuki have managed to maintain consistency throughout the season,” he continued.
Jack Miller, Dovizioso, Joan Mir, and all other MotoGP riders will prepare to face the race at the Ricardo Tomo Circuit. The circuit, located in Valencia, Spain, is scheduled to hold two races at once. The European MotoGP will be the first on Sunday (8/11/2020) followed by the Valencia MotoGP one week later.
