The Argentine soccer legend Diego Maradona has undergone a successful operation to remove a blood clot that was on his brain. This is a blood clot between the hard meninges and the brain. Initially, there was only talk of emotional stress, anemia and dehydration. The blood clot was discovered during the tests.
Maradona was taken to a hospital in La Plata on Monday, about an hour and half drive away from the capital Buenas Aires.
“The Maradona operation is over and it was a success. Everything went as planned. Diego is fine and he is now resting in his room. Maradona was rushed to a hospital in La Plata on Monday.” wrote his press spokesman Sebastián Sanchi on Instagram on Tuesday.
Dr. Leopoldo Luque, who led the team that operated on Maradona said: “Diego tolerated the operation very well. He is awake. Everything is very good,”
The operation, which involved several doctors, took about an hour and 20 minutes, Luque added. It was not particularly complicated. But it remains a neurosurgical procedure.” he added.
Maradona is now under observation in his room and is recovering. When he be released depends on the further course of events.
His words were accompanied by applause and cheers from dozens of fans who waited for hours in front of the clinic and feared for the welfare of their idol, as TV pictures showed.
“I love you, Diego,” shouted a fan.
Many fans wore jerseys from the Argentine national team with Maradona’s shirt number 10 or from his home club Boca Juniors. Others held up flags with the likeness of the “Pibe de Oro” (golden boy), who is revered as a national hero in his homeland.
On his 60th birthday on Friday, Maradona had already made a battered impression. Before the first game of his club Gimnasia y Esgrima La Plata after the Corona break, he came briefly to the stadium to receive congratulations and gifts. However, he had to be supported by two companions while walking. He followed the game from home on the advice of his doctor.
