Formula 1 new regulations that will come into force in 2022 are focused more than anything on equalising the category.
New Ferrari driver Carlos Sainz Jr, hopes this will change soon. He was talking to media about the potential impact of the F1 2022 regulations, which is expected to level the playing field in the sport.
“What I want is for Formula 1 to have a tighter grid in the future, allowing the driver to make more differences.” Sainz said.
“As you get to F1, you quickly realise that it is very difficult to beat anyone who has a car that is three tenths faster than you, because as a driver, you are fighting by about two tenths with your teammate.
“That’s been the case with all my team-mates, you’re just two tenths up or two tenths down. But then when someone out qualifies you by 1.5 seconds, then you know that you are not really competing with him.” Sainz added.
The Spaniard driver, however, believes that the category is on the right track with the new 2022 regulations.
“I think the FOM, Liberty Media and the FIA have done a very good job with the 2022 regulations and have given us a chance. So let’s hope That the sport becomes a little more dependent on the drivers in terms of driving, that is to say, that it is less dependent on the car.” Sainz said.
“I think that this way the category can be much tighter and more fun. That will create a larger audience and I think it will be better for all.” he added.
Sainz joined the Italian manufacturer for next season to replace Sebastian Vettel after signing a two-year deal.
