Australian Open: Paula Badosa Tests Positive for COVID-19

Spain’s Paula Badosa  has tested  positive for COVID-19  on the seventh day of her quarantine at the Melbourne hotel where she was isolated.

In a statement issued this Thursday on her social media, Badosa confirmed that she had symptoms of the disease and had been transferred to another hotel. Therefore, she will miss the Australian Open 2021, as she does not arrive in time to meet the deadlines.

According to reports, each tennis player must test negative for antigens up to three times before the start of the tournament scheduled for Monday, February 8.

“I have bad news: as you know since I arrived in Melbourne I have been confined to the room.” Badosa posted.

“Today I received a positive COVID-19 test result. I’m feeling unwell and have some symptoms, but I’ll try to recover as soon as possible listening to the doctors. I’ve been taken to a health hotel to self-isolate and be monitored.” she added.

Badosa, who had a guaranteed place in the final draw of the first Grand Slam of 2021, was one of the 72 members of the group of tennis players who had to quarantined after several posituves appeared on the flight that took her to Australia.

The Australian Open accentuates the uncertainty after the third plane with players on board affected by coronavirus, after the first two that accumulated a total of four cases on Sunday.

There were five infected passengers who have landed in Australia to be present at the first Grand Slam of the season after the new positive found on flight QR7485 from Doha to Melbourne.

The first two infected planes forced a total of 125 passengers to confine themselves to their rooms for a period of two weeks in which the only training allowed will be reduced to both the use of the stationary bicycle installed in the bedrooms and the physical exercises that can develop in reduced dimensions.
