Premier League results: Everton silence Liverpool at Anfield

Liverpool were beaten 0-2 when facing Everton in the Premier League match at Anfield Stadium, Sunday (21/2).

Everton took a 1-0 lead over Liverpool when the game had only been running for three minutes. Richarlison did not waste James Rodriguez’s breakthrough bait to break into Alisson’s goal.

Liverpool just got the first chance in the 19th minute. Roberto Firmino receives the ball in the penalty box but his shot is blocked by Michael Keane.

One minute later, Liverpool almost equalized to 1-1. Jordan Henderson, who rose to help attack, unleashed a speculative shot from outside the area which Jordan Pickford struggled to save.

In the 33rd minute, Everton had a golden opportunity to increase the score to 2-0. However, Seamus Coleman’s header in the penalty box using Lucas Digne’s pass was still able to be thwarted by Alisson.

At the start of the second half, Liverpool immediately created opportunities to score goals. Sadio Mane’s header utilizing a cross from the left side is still right towards Pickford.

Mane got another chance in the 50th minute. This time, the header of the Senegalese winger after receiving Curtis Jones’s pass still had not met the target.

Liverpool again had a golden opportunity to equalize to 1-1 in the 69th minute. Mohamed Salah can open a shot from inside the penalty box but his shot can still be blocked by Pickford who played brilliantly under the Everton goalpost.

Everton, who were under constant pressure, won a penalty after Dominic Calvert-Lewin was brought down by Alexander-Arnold in the penalty box in the 82nd minute. Gylfi Sigurdsson who advanced as executor managed to carry out his duties perfectly to change the score to 2-0.

After the goal, Liverpool continued to apply pressure but Everton appeared very disciplined in defense. Until the second half ended, the score 2-0 for Everton’s victory did not change.

This positive result also made Everton match Liverpool’s points. Everton have both collected 40 points with Liverpool who are sixth in the standings. For Liverpool to defeat at home, their steps to win a ticket to the Champions League next season are more complicated.

After the match, Klopp seemed confused by what his team were experiencing. In fact, he considered Liverpool to be dominant in this match.

“I really can’t explain it. I think we dominated the game so it’s a familiar story but the opponent [can still score goals],” said Klopp as quoted by the Mirror.

Referring to statistics, Liverpool are dominant in possession. Liverpool’s possession of the ball reaches 72 percent compared to 28 percent for the visitors.

Liverpool also made 15 attempts to score with six of them on target. However, none of them resulted in goals.

In contrast Everton made nine goalscoring attempts with six shots on target. Of the six opportunities, Everton can score two goals against Alisson Becker.
