Tottenham Hotspur was only able to draw 2-2 against Newcastle United in the Premier League at St James Park Stadium, Sunday (4/4).
Newcastle took the lead in the 28th minute through Joelinton’s goal. The goal came from a blunder from Tottenham defender Davinson Sanchez who lost the ball at the heart of his own defense.
The ball was then grabbed by Newcastle player Matt Ritchie and fell to the feet of Sean Longstaff who immediately gave an assist to Joelinton who was not guarded in the Tottenham penalty box. Joelinton easily broke into Hugo Lloris’s goal without meaningful escort.
Tottenham only needed two minutes to equalize through Harry Kane. The Tottenham captain successfully took advantage of the miscommunication between Emil Krafth and Newcastle goalkeeper Martin Dubravka. Kane easily slammed the ball into the Newcastle goal.
Kane then led Tottenham to lead 2-1 in the 34th minute. Receiving Tanguy Ndombele’s through ball, Kane fired a low shot that Dubravka couldn’t anticipate. 2-1 score for Tottenham lasted until the end of the first half.
Entering the second half, Newcastle tried to appear more attacking in order to catch up. Joelinton actually got the opportunity to equalize the score in the 62nd minute, but his shot to greet Jonjo Shelvey’s pass was wide.
Joelinton again wasted a golden opportunity to score in the 71st minute. Unfortunately, his shot to greet Emil Kraft’s cross still slightly deviated from the goal.
In the 85th minute, Kane almost widened Tottenham’s lead. However, the British attacker’s shot still hit the post.
Shortly thereafter, the Magpies counterattack was disastrous for Tottenham. Willoc’s shot from two meters away managed to break into Hugo Lloris’s goal.
The Spurs’ victory that was in sight vanished at once. Newcastle managed to equalize the score 2-2 until the game was over.
The result thwarted the ambition of Jose Mourinho’s team to enter the top four, and was only enough to move up to fifth in the standings with a collection of 49 points, still two points behind Chelsea in fourth.
Meanwhile, Newcastle (29 points) maintain hope in the competition to avoid relegation, although temporarily remain 17th with a safe three points from the red zone.
However, Newcastle could slip into the relegation zone if Fulham, who have the advantage on goal difference, win over Aston Villa late in the game.
