Premier League Results: Liverpool Draw 1-1 Against Newcastle

Liverpool drew 1-1 with Newcastle United in the Premier League at Anfield Stadium, Saturday (24/4).

The Reds, who needed a win to compete for tickets to the Champions League next season, immediately took the lead in the third minute thanks to Mohamed Salah’s goal.

Sadio Mane’s pass failed to be cleared by Ciaran Clark. The ball is still in the penalty box. Salah, who was escorted by Matt Ritchie, was able to open fire while turning his body.

Newcastle trying to get away from the relegation zone try to equalize. Allan Saint Maximin, Joelinton, Miguel Almiron, Sean Longstaff banged on the Liverpool defense.

Opportunities were created by The Magpies, but no goals were created. Alisson Becker appeared quite solid in this match.

On the other hand, Martin Dubravka, who stands under the Newcastle rule, is no less tough than Alisson.

Dubravka repeatedly received tests from the Liverpool attack line which was inhabited by four figures with typical forwards namely Salah, Diogo Jota, Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino.

Liverpool, who dominate possession, have no trouble reaching the final third of the Newcastle defense. Despite being able to break through the Newcastle defense cavity, Liverpool were not effective and efficient enough to take advantage of opportunities.

Apart from the inaccurate settlement, Dubravka’s presence was also a factor in Liverpool’s score not increasing.

Liverpool, which has 20 opportunities to open fire, is only able to direct nine towards the goal.

Liverpool’s thin advantage is quite risky because Newcastle have not lost their attacking ability even though they are often attacked.

Entering injury time, Callum Wilson scored, but was ruled out because the ball hit the arm first.

Newcastle then actually scored two minutes later. Joseph Willock fired a strong shot from inside the penalty box after receiving feedback from Dwight Gayle. Score a 1-1 draw.

With one additional point, Liverpool are still in the sixth place in the Premier League with 54 points and Newcastle are in 15th place with 36 points.

Liverpool coach Jurgen Klopp said his team did not deserve to appear in the Champions League after being held to a 1-1 draw with bottom team Newcastle United

Klopp could not cover up his disappointment after the match. The German coach considered the draw against Newcastle felt like a defeat for Liverpool.

“It’s a point, but as you say, this feels like a defeat. I don’t see we deserve to play in the Champions League today,” he said as quoted by the Daily Mail.

The German coach regretted the failure of his team to finish the match faster by scoring an additional goal against Newcastle.

“We didn’t finish the game sooner. We scored a beautiful goal. We kept them alive,” said Klopp.

“In the end, they deserved the goal because they scored the previous goal. [Callum] Wilson was unlucky, but it was handball.”
