Manchester City won the Carabao Cup 4 times in a row

Manchester City won the Carabao Cup for the fourth time in a row after defeating Tottenham Hotspur 1-0 in the final at Wembley Stadium, London, Sunday (25/4).

This title extends Man City’s dominance in the Carabao Cup. The Citizens have always been champions since the 2017/2018 season.

Man City appeared dominant in the first half. Two opportunities have been obtained by Man City through Phil Foden and Raheem Sterling who have yet to produce goals.

Tottenham responded to Man City’s pressure in the 20th minute. Toby Alderweireld fired a shot that still did not endanger the Man City goal that was escorted by Zack Steffen.

After that, Man City again created several opportunities through Sterling and Riyad Mahrez. The two opportunities were again unable to thrill Hugo Lloris’s goal.

Man City’s inability to score against Tottenham made the match in the first half end goalless.

At the start of the second half, Tottenham became the first team to pose a threat. Lo Celso shot a speculative shot into the right corner of the net which Zack Steffen could still thwart and resulted in a corner shot in the 47th minute.

Man City got a chance to score in the 71st minute. Kevin De Bruyne’s measured pass was struck by Fernandinho with a header that Hugo Lloris could still secure.

One minute later, Man City again posed a threat to Tottenham’s defense. This time, Raheem Sterling’s bait was greeted by Ilkay Gundogan’s first-time kick, which had yet to meet the target.

Man City are increasingly applying pressure to break into Tottenham’s goal. Winger Riyad Mahrez made an individual action which ended with a shot at the far post but was still thwarted by Lloris as he dropped.

Man City’s hard work to score a goal paid off in the 82nd minute. De Bruyne’s dead ball execution was headed by Aymeric Laporte to break into Tottenham’s goal while changing the score to 1-0 and leading Man City to win.

This record makes Manchester City equal to Liverpool. Liverpool is the first team in history to win the Carabo Cup 4 times in a row.

The Reds did so in the 1981 to 1984 period. Both Manchester City and Liverpool are the two most successful teams in the Carabao Cup. Both of them have collected a total of 8 trophies.
