Chelsea managed to get their revenge by beating Leicester City 2-1 in Week 37 of the Premier League at Stamford Bridge Stadium, Wednesday (19/5).
A few days ago Chelsea were forced to give up the FA Cup title after losing 0-1 to Leicester in the final at Wembley. Now, the Blues are responding to it in the Premier League.
Chelsea had opened the scoring in the 22nd minute through a goal by Timo Werner. However, the referee canceled the goal because the player was already in an offside position first.
Not only was Timo Werner’s one goal for Chelsea in this match ruled out, but twice in this one match.
Precisely in the 35th minute, the German player managed to score another goal, but after the referee checked through the Video Assistant Referee (VAR), the goal was disallowed because Timo Werner made a handball when he scored the goal.
Finally Chelsea had to settle for a goalless draw in the first half of the match against Leicester City at Stamford Bridge with a bitter pill that they should have been able to lead two goals through Timo Werner’s goal.
However, Chelsea started the second half very well. The Blues defender, Antonio Rudiger, broke the deadlock and gave his team a 1-0 lead in the 47th minute. Starting from Ben Chilwell’s corner, Cesar Azpilicueta brought the ball towards the Leicester City goalpost and Rudiger continued to score a goal.
Chelsea have a chance to double the lead after Timo Werner was brought down by Wesley Fofana in the penalty box in the 65th minute. Jorginho, who became the executor, did a good job and gave the Blues a 2-0 lead.
Leicester City managed to reply and make it 1-2 through Kelechi Iheanacho’s goal in the 76th minute. Starting from a Chelsea error playing the ball at the back, Wilfred Ndidi successfully stole the ball from Mateo Kovacic and provided an assist for Iheanacho which resulted in a sweet goal.
The battle between the two teams was getting fiercer as the match ended. Even Antonio Rudiger and Ricardo Pereira were involved in a feud that saw everyone involved and Leicester City goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel tried to break up the feud.
Referee Mike Dean then watched the broadcast on VAR to assess the incident. The court finally only gave a yellow card to Leicester City substitute Daniel Amartey for his involvement in the incident.
Finally the match ended in a 2-1 win for Chelsea. This victory was the revenge for Chelsea who lost to Leicester City in the FA Cup final, as well as the success of the Blues in shifting the Foxes from third in the Premier League standings while ensuring a ticket to the Champions League next season.
These results make Chelsea move up to third place in the standings with a collection of 67 points. Meanwhile, Leicester were forced to drop to fourth with 66 points.
These results also make the map of the competition in the top four of the Premier League to be determined until the last week. Last season’s Premier League champions, Liverpool, also have a chance to poke at the last minute.
The Reds are currently fifth on 63 points but have two games remaining. Mohamed Salah et al can lock in third position if they manage to win in the last two matches.
