Stefanos Tsitsipas, a Greek national, showed an impressive performance in the final of this season’s Lyon Open on Sunday (23/5) local time.

Facing British national Cameron Norrie, the second seed won an impressive 6-3, 6-3 victory at the Lyon Open and won a second title in the 2021 season.

The player, who won the first Masters 1000 tournament title of his career at the Monte Carlo Open in April, has now bagged 33 wins in the 2021 season, four more than Andrey Rublev.

Thanks to the victory over Norrie, the second seed now has seven titles and is further strengthening his lead at the top of the ATP Race To Turin standings after with 250 points won at the Lyon Open. He has 3,360 points, ahead of Novak Djokovic who has bagged 2,920 points. In addition, this victory confirmed his position as one of the favorites at the French Open.

“I felt in great shape from the start of the tournament and proud of today’s match (23/5). Then I know the match will be difficult against Cameron who has shown impressive form all week,” said Stefanos Tsitsipas.

“He has won against a very good player and showed what a left-handed player can do on clay. Today’s match was not easy, I had to overcome the tension and I am proud of my performance and the way I stay focused on achieving my goals.”

Starting the match, the two players secured the break point opportunities they faced in their respective opening service games. After that, Tsitsipas dictated the game with a powerful forehand before he took a 5-3 lead. By winning 69 percent of points from her first serve in the opening set that the Greek national was able to close the first set with one of the seven aces she created in the first set.

Tsitsipas pushed Norrie back at the start of the second set, moved well, and hit hard. Meanwhile, the final at the Lyon Open this season is Norrie’s third ATP tournament final. Despite the defeat, his two straight sets wins over Dominic Thiem and Karen Khachanov in Lyon this season saw him bag 23 victories in the 2021 season. He earned 150 points for appearing in the final of the Lyon Open.
