The Formula 1 Mexican Grand Prix returned in 2015 after more than 23 years of absence and it was a spectacular party attended by more than 330,000 fans. The edition was won by Nico Rosberg and since then Mexico City has been present on the Formula 1 calendar.
In the 2021 season, F1 is delighted to announce that Mexican GP will continue to be held in Mexico City unti at least the end of 2022.
But according to Red Bull driver Sergio Perez father, Antonio Perez, there is the possibility that another city in the country will host a Grand Prix in 2024.
The venue would be Cancun and according to information from Reforma, it is planned that it will not replace that of the Hermano Rodriguez Autodrome , but that it will join the calendar and there will be two races in Mexican territory.
Antonio had already flirted with the idea by posting a photo with International Automobile Federation (FIA) president Jean Todt, this while having a conversation during the Hungarian Grand Prix last weekend.
“It is a new project and we would start from scratch. We are just starting with letters of commitment, but we were very well received by Jean Todt and Stefano Domenicali.”Antonio said.
Mexico in December 2020 went up to third position in the world ranking of the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) in terms of tourist reception and Cancun is one of the most popular destinations in the country, advantages that could be used to achieve a place on the F1 calendar.
Mexico City Mayor Claudia Sheinbaum on the other hand, said the Mexico City government pleased to have renewed their partnership with F1.
“The presence of Formula 1 in the city for further three more years, was achieved for the first time through a new financing model in which public resources are mot used.”
