Nice and Marseille Could Face Sanctions after Sunday’s Incidents

Following the incidents at the Allianz Riviera during the third day of Ligue 1 between OGC Nice and Olympique Marseille on Sunday, sanctions should be taken against the different players and fans.

According to reports, the incidents can go in several directions. However, there are likely to be sanctions involving Nice, its stadium and the fans involved.

“Following the serious incidents of the match between Nice and Marseille, the disciplinary commission of the LFP summons two clubs for the session of the Wednesday, 25 August 2021.” LFP said in a statement.

Nice headed into the second half with a 1-0 lead thanks to a goal from Kasper Dolberg, but chaos ensured when Dimitri Payet was pelted with a bottle as be attempted to take a corner.

Payet got eraged and threw the bottle back towards the Nice fans in the bleachers, causing home fans to storm the pitch in some bizarrre scenes.

The fans were unable to be contained by security, and the game was called off in the 75th minute. Surprisingly, a member of the Marseillie coaching staff punched a fan in the face as a fan attempted to kick Payet.

As things became increasingly tense, Marseille manager Jorge Sampaoli appeared as if he wanted to throw his hands in the air.

Nice president Jean-Pierre Rivere countered by pointing the finger at the Marseille players and the club’s security detail.

“It’s unfortunate that it ended like that. What set fire to the powder is the reaction of the Marseille players throwing back the bottles into the stands.” Rivere said.

“Marseille security should not have intervened on the field and struck our players. Everyone decided to restart the match. I did not understand the Marseille decision not to restart.” he added.
