Cori Gauff Doesn’t Regret Throwing Rackets, But Here’s What She Regrets

Cori Gauff admits she was disappointed after losing in the 2021 US Open women’s doubles final to compatriot Catherine McNally.

The US duo were so close to becoming US Open women’s doubles champions before Sam Stosur and Zhang Shuai claimed a 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 victory.

The 17-year-old paid tribute to Stosur and Zhang’s performance by stating that they played a great game.

“For sure, it wasn’t the result we wanted but we got here. And I think the game will only be decided by three or four points. I think, in the future we know how to play well in those crucial points,” said Cori Gauff.

“Our opponents, Shuai and Sam, played a great game. There’s a reason these two have multiple Grand Slam titles and admirable results at Grand Slams. Hopefully next time we can play them in the final and we will be in a different situation.”

The 17-year-old was visibly frustrate in the US Open final and one of his rackets nearly hit a child in the stands. He didn’t regret throwing his racket, but he did regret that it nearly hit a child.

“I mean, I lost a Grand Slam final,” Gauff said. “There is nothing else to say. Just a disappointment. I didn’t mean the racket to fall in that direction, but I did throw it. Maybe it wasn’t my best attitude.”

“But I don’t think there’s any explanation I can come up with for that frustration.”

“I mean, we got our chances. I know it and think the audience knows it too. Yes, I didn’t mean to do it at the time, but I let my emotions get the better of me.”

“I don’t regret it. I’m just sorry that the racket flew that far and almost hit a child.”

“He’s fine. I gave the racket to him. I actually spoke to him before the game and he was fine. Yeah, I think I was just frustrated by losing a Grand Slam final.
