Marc Marquez Set to Miss Portimao MotoGP 2021

Honda has confirmed Marc Marquez to miss Portimao MotoGP at at the Autodromo Algarve, Portugal this Sunday due to a training accident.

Marquez fell during an off-road training session last Saturday and suffered a minor concussion. The Spaniard’s situation did not improve after a few daya of rest. As a precaution, the doctors will keep him aside this weekend.

“It was okay but he was not feeling so good, a little bit like dizzy. So we checked with the doctor and it was correct not to race if you are not 100%.” Honda boss Alberto Puig said.

Concussions are one of the most sensitive issues in sports today. In the last decade, medical studies on blows to the head have advanced a lot and have left a protocol for action against concussions that has a fairly clear premise.

“This Saturday while I was training off-road to prepare for the next race, I suffered a fall that caused a slight concussion to my head.” Marquez said.

“After a few days of rest and seeing that I was still unwell, today I had a medical check-up and as a precaution I will not contest the Algarve GP.” Marquez added.

The six-time MotoGP champion already had a season full of misery. Marquez missed the first two races in Qatar due to a compound arm fracture he sustained in the first Grand Prix last year.

He underwent surgery at the time, but forced the plate that had been put in his arm when opening a window. He was out for a year.

At the German GP, the eighth race of the 2021 season, Marquez recorded his first win. He also captured the last two races win so far in the United States and Emilia-Romagna.

Marquez is expected to be present for the final round in Valencia next week. He currently sits on sixth place in the MotoGP standings with 142 points.
