Sebastian Vettel believes that Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen would both be deserved Formula 1 world champions in 2021, but deep in his heart the German still hopes for the first Dutch drover F1 title. Otherwise, his fellow Michael Schumacher will lose a record.
Former Ferrari champions Schumacher now shares the record number of seven world titles with Hamilton. If the Briton becomes champion again on Sunday, he will hold the record with eight titles alone.
“So that’s why I hope for Max deep down. On the other hand, even if Hamilton wins five more titles, for me Michael Schumacher is the greatest of all time.” Vettel said.
“I don’t care. I would be happy for Red Bull, it would be nice to see them win again. I have good memories of the team, but both Verstappen and Hamilton deserve it.” Vettel added.
Fernando Alonso, meanwhile, also received questions about the battle between Verstappen and Hamilton.
The Spaniard was full of praise for the Red Bull driver. Images from Ziggo show that Alonso is watching and enjoying Verstappen’s qualifying round in Saudi Arabia.
“He really takes that car to another level. And Mercedes can win the constructors’ championship because they have built the best car.” Alonso said.
The entire title fight appeals to the two-time world champion as a motorsport enthusiast. The intense battle reminds Alonso of his own battles with Schumacher, who finished second behind him in the 2006 world champion standings.
Verstappen and Hamilton will compete for the world title at the Yas Marina Circuit, in Abu Dhabi, on Sunday.
If both drivers DNF or do not score points, Verstappen will be world champion in 2021 due to a huge number of victories. If they both cross the finish line, the driver with the highest ranking wins the title.
