7 Ways Tottenham Hotspur Reduce Carbon Emission

English Premier League club Tottenham Hotspur have signed a partnership with the United Nations (UN). The cooperation concerns on zero carbon emissions. The club, nicknamed The Lilywhites, participates in the Race for Zero Carbon (RtZ) Program. The program has a zero carbon emission target by 2040.

The program is entitled United Nations Sports for Climate Action Framework. The current target of the program is to reduce the amount of carbon emissions by half by 2030.

As a concrete step to realize this program, Tottenham Hotspur has made various efforts to reduce carbon emissions at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. At least, there are seven ways the Spurs is making in order to reduce carbon emissions.

First, at the stadium, Tottenham Hotspur have used LED-based lights and high efficiency building services systems in place to reduce energy consumption. Second, in the operation of the club, there is a reduction in the use of single-use plastics. Some examples are players drink water from cartons, food is served in recyclable packaging with wooden cutlery, and even beer keg caps are recycled at the stadium.

Third, the manager of Tottenham Hotspur implements a policy of saving the use of clean water. Fourth, all sports equipment such as the players’ jersey and replica jerseys for fans at Tottenham Hotspur has used polyester from plastic bottles.

Fifth, club members travel for various matches and activities using environmentally friendly vehicles. “This effort reduces energy savings by up to 80 percent,” said Tottenham Hotspur Executive Director Donna-Maria Cullen.

Sixth, there is a program that requires fans to walk or use environmentally friendly transportation to come to Tottenham Hotspur’s home stadium to watch the matches of their favorite club. “We started this program at the beginning of the 2021-2022 season,” said Donna-Maria Cullen.

Seventh, Tottenham Hotspur are also increasing the menu of vegetables and meat-based vegetables in the dishes sold at the stadium. “We increased the content of vegetables and vegetable-based meat to 94 percent,” said Donna-Maria Cullen.

Claire Poole, Founder, Sport Positive, said: “Congratulations to Tottenham Hotspur for taking joint-first in our Sport Positive EPL Sustainability League for 2021. The Club and its fans should be very proud of this achievement, but we must continue to do more and I know Spurs has a lot more planned. The climate crisis is not standing still, and neither can we.”
