UEFA to penalize Russia

Following the clashes on Saturday night, both during and after the game between England and Russia, the European football governing body are seeking to press sanctions against the Russian Football federations. The Russian fans have been alleged of firing a missile during the game, causing crowd disturbance, racial abuse and getting into a fight with the English supporters. UEFA claimed its jurisdictions lies within Stade Velodrome and any activity outside is to be dealt with by the French authorities.

These probes come in the wake of disruptive behaviour both during the game and pre match clashes between the Russian and English fans in Marseille. This is a very concerning topic for international footballing authorities as Russia are to host the 2018 football world cup. UEFA has opened disciplinary proceedings against the football union of Russia. In an official statement from UEFA it was announced that Russian fans were deemed responsible for the misconduct and shall be dealt with accordingly

“Disciplinary proceedings have been opened against the Russian Football Union (RFU) for the following events occurring inside the stadium. A decision on the sanctions to be imposed will be made within the next few days, once the RFU has been able to submit written statements and evidence.”

“UEFA acknowledges that there were segregation issues at Stade Velodrome and will implement corrective measures to strengthen the deployment of security personnel at stadiums, in close collaboration with local authorities.”

“The security forces can’t be diverted from their public security mission by the reckless behaviour and deliberate pseudo-fans whose only motivation is to disrupt public order and whose interior minister condemns the unacceptable conduct.”

The French interior minister condemned the attacks and praised the rather absent security forces and reminded that the country should keep their guard up against a more serious terrorist attack in the future.
