Dramatic Comeback, Liverpool Qualify for the 2021-2022 Champions League Final!

Villarreal vs Liverpool results in the 2021-2022 Champions League semi-final second leg are known. After going through a tight 90-minute match, the Reds – Liverpool’s nickname – won a dramatic 3-2 over Villarreal.

It’s said to be dramatic because Liverpool were 0-2 behind the hosts in the first half. Thanks to this 3-2 victory, Liverpool qualified for the 2021-2022 Champions League final after winning 5-2 on aggregate over Villarreal, considering that in the first leg of the semifinal the Reds won 2-0.

First round

Taking place at the Estadio de la Ceramica, Wednesday (4/5/2022), Villarreal were able to steal the advantage in the third minute. Boulaye scored a goal through his shot and made Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson not move.

The incident took Liverpool by surprise. They immediately tried to find a way to catch up. In the 11th minute, they had a chance, but Diogo Jota’s shot did not meet the target.

Opportunities for Liverpool then came in the 26th minute. Jota again penetrated the Villarreal defence and fired a shot. However, his efforts can still be driven by the opponent.

After that, Villarreal began to attack. However, their efforts were thwarted, when Giovani Lo Celso was caught by Alisson in the 37th minute. Villarreal had asked for a penalty, but was not granted.

The hosts then successfully doubled their lead in the 41st minute. This time, it was Francis Coquelin who successfully broke into Liverpool’s goal. That goal made Villarreal end the first half with a score of 2-0.

Second Half

Liverpool coach, Jurgen Klopp, immediately made changes as soon as the second half began, to be precise by including Luis Diaz to replace Diogo Jota. This makes the game for the Reds more powerful and threatens the Villarreal defence.

Opportunities for the visitors also came in the 55th minute. Starting from a free kick, Trent Alexander-Arnold grabbed the ball gag with his feet. However, his shot still hit the crossbar. Liverpool finally managed to reduce the lag in the 62nd minute. It was Fabinho who managed to score a goal after escaping the offside trap and releasing a kick.

Liverpool did not take long to equalise. In the 67th minute, Luis Diaz, who had just entered at the beginning of the second half, managed to break into Villarreal’s goal. Entering the 74th minute, Liverpool managed to turn the lead. Sadio Mane scored with his shot, and capitalised on a mistake by Villarreal goalkeeper Geronimo Rulli.

The situation made Villarreal a little frustrated. They even started playing rough and thus making hard fouls. The peak, Etienne Capoue got a red card, after receiving a second yellow card in the 85th minute. On the other hand, Liverpool managed to survive well until the game was over. They also ended the match with a score of 3-2, and qualified for the top party with an aggregate score of 5-2.
