Italian midfielder Giorgio Chiellini has announced his retirement from international football after the Intercontinental Super Cup match against Argentina in the 2022 summer.
The Intercontinental Super Cup match will take place at Wembley Stadium, London, England, on June 2nd.
“I’ll say goodbye to the national team at Wembley. I’d like to say goodbye to the Azzurri with a nice memory. That will certainly be my last game with Italy.” Chiellini said.
Chiellini was born in 1984 and started playing professional football with Livorno club in 2000. He joined the Italian national team in 2004, after Euro 2004. Since then, Chiellini has played for Gli Azzurri 116 times, scoring 116 times. 8 goals.
The 37-year-old midfielder won Eeuro 2020 and runner-up at Euro 2012 for Italy national team. Gli Azzurri also finished 3rd in the Confederations Cup in 2013 and the Nations League in the 2020/21 season.
On the other hand, Chiellini won 3rd place in the 2004 Olympics and won the 2003 European Under-19 Championship.
Chiellini also left open the possibility of leaving Juventus at the end of the season. He could leave on a free transfer and set his sights on the US MLS.
“My love affair with Juventus is not ending, it will never end. Of course, from now to the end of the season I do have to evaluate everything, talk to my family about what is best.” Chiellini said.
“Let’s reach fourth place [in Serie A] first and win the Coppa Italia, then we’ll sit down with my two families, at home and Juventus to figure out what is best for everyone.
“It was the same last summer, I took time and didn’t sign the new contract until after the Euros. At my age, you can’t look too far into the long-term, but that’s only natural, it’s all fine.” he added.
