Marquez: Surgery doesn’t guarantee that I will win MotoGP again

Marc Marquez stated that the operation he was going to do would not automatically guarantee he would become a MotoGP champion again but insisted this was the most appropriate step.

Marquez will undergo surgery on his right arm as a recovery step from an injury at the 2020 MotoGP. This is the fourth time Marquez has had surgery on his right arm.

Marquez emphasized that this operation does not necessarily guarantee that he will be able to immediately return to dominate MotoGP and win the championship from series to series.

“Having surgery was the right decision for my future, but it’s not a step that means I have surgery and then [automatically] win again.”

“It’s not like that. The target of this operation is to try to get back to enjoying racing and have a normal life. Forget about painkillers and everything else. This is the target of the operation,” Marquez said as quoted by Crash.

With Marquez hoping to get back to enjoying racing, the Spaniard also believes the opportunity to win again can be wide open.

“When I have it all back, enjoy racing again, the chances of getting good results will increase,” said Marquez.

Marquez admitted that initially he had concerns about the fourth operation. However, once the team from the Mayo Clinic without hesitation asked Marquez to undergo a fourth operation, Marquez swiftly agreed to this.

“They called me and said straight away: ‘Come next week. We don’t know what your condition is and what you are doing at the moment. But the rotation [of the bones in the right arm] is too big. And it has to stop.”

“So for me it was an easy decision [to undergo surgery]. Last Friday was one of the best days of the year,” said Marquez.

Marquez received news about the fourth operation on Friday (27/5) while he was competing in the Italian MotoGP. Marquez then decided to finish the Italian MotoGP race before undergoing the operation.

Marquez ended the Italian MotoGP by finishing in 10th position.

“I said to the doctor and the people around me, ‘With a race like this, I will do it in 1-2 years. Nothing more’. That’s because I didn’t enjoy it and had to suffer a lot.”

“But by undergoing this operation, I hope my life changes. The last two years have not been easy,” Marquez said as quoted by Crash.

Marquez then said his days have changed since the injury approached. He no longer enjoys the moment as a racer.

“My daily life has been greatly affected by it. Before, I always did a lot of training at home on motorbikes, motocross, on all kinds of bikes.”

“But now my normal life is coming back from racing, staying 2-3 days at home, relaxing because I can’t do anything, then working my legs, cycling and then trying to train again. Physiotherapy, physiotherapy and pain medication,” he said. Marquez.
