Casper Ruud Norwegian gave his best, including when he competed in the Swiss Open, Gstaad 2022 season

The first seed struggled to turn things around midway through the Swiss Open final before snatching a 4-6, 7-6, 6-2 victory over second seed Matteo Berrettini.

Italian tennis player, Berrettini appeared to appear with full control in the final of the Swiss Open after claiming the first set. But the reigning champion fought hard to win the second set tiebreak and he dominated the third set with a powerful forehand en route to his ninth career title and eighth clay-court title after 2 hours 34 minutes.

“I changed something a bit in the third set, in particular, which helped a lot,” said Ruud when asked how he turned things around to win.

“Games and points go by quickly here. If you’re not ready and focused, you can get broken or you can break, because the conditions allow you to do that.”

“So the key for me was to keep my serve, I did that in the second set. Securing that break point opportunity was very important to me and things went my way in the tiebreak. So, that’s a bit of an advantage. I just tried to keep that momentum in the third set, I was able to get the break, and played better and better throughout the third set.”

With a successful title defense, the Norwegian recorded a 16-0 record in Switzerland. Apart from winning two titles at Gstaad, he has also won the Geneva Open the last two editions.

“I think Switzerland is a country with a lot of history in the tennis world, winning a lot of Grand Slam titles by Roger Federer and Stan Wawrinka in the last 18, 19 seasons,” said Casper Ruud.

“So, it’s an inspiration to everyone around the world, myself included, that they are able to show the identity of a small country like this, just like Norway. Everything about Switzerland reminds me a little bit of Norway.”

Head to head both players drew 2-2 as they entered the final of the Swiss Open and with a win over Berrettini, now Ruud is narrowly ahead in their rivalry.
