Aston Martin have confirmed the signing of Fernando Alonso to replace the German driver Sebastian Vettel for next season.
Alonso’s relationship with Alpine has never really taken off, especially since his recent track battle with Esteban Ocon, which have more than once frustrated Alonso due to a lack of teamwork.
“Aston Martin is delighted to confirm that Fernando Alonso will join the team in 2023 on a multi-year contract. The entire company is excited to bring Fernando’s incredible experience and brilliant racing speed and expertise to the team,” Aston Martin said in a statement.
“The signing of a specialised talent like Fernando is a testament to an organisation that is committed to developing an excellent F1 team.” they added.
Aston Martin owner, Lawrence Stroll, has admitted that he has admired Alonso for many years in F1.
“I have admired Alonso for years, he has the same love for competition and victory as I do.” Stroll said.
“A totally common view has emerged in the last few conversations. We want to work together and we want to win together.” he added.
The two-time world champion spoke about his upcoming new adventure. The Spaniard hopes to compete for the drivers’ championship again.
“Aston Martin are making the best effort to win, at the moment they are a team that certainly has a long-term vision and you can feel the energy they put into Formula 1.” Alonso said.
“I’ve known Lawrence and Lance Stroll for years, I know how much passion a year. And I’m still so hungry, for victories and duels to stay ahead.” Alonso added.
Alonso will pair up with Lance Stroll, son of Lawrence, who is also looking for great results after several seasons in which the Canadian still does not seem to find the suitable car to finish in the top positions of the GPs.
