Varane’s Tears Due to Fear of Missing 2022 World Cup

Manchester United defender Raphael Varane suffered an injury against Chelsea and threatened to miss playing for France in the 2022 World Cup. Chelsea vs Man United match in week 13 of the 2022-2023 Premier League which took place at Stamford Bridge Stadium, Saturday (22/10/2022) , ended with the score 1-1. Chelsea took the lead through Jorginho’s penalty in the 87th minute, before Man United equalized via Casemiro’s header (90+4′).

Before Chelsea opened the scoring, Man United had already lost Raphael Varane who had to be withdrawn in the 60th minute due to a suspected knee injury. The 29-year-old defender was injured while trying to cut off Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s pass.

He then received treatment on the pitch before being replaced by Victor Lindeloef. Despite being able to leave the pitch without being carried on a stretcher, Varane couldn’t hide his sadness and burst into tears. He seemed worried about the possibility of missing the 2022 World Cup.

After the match, Man United coach Erik ten Hag revealed that Varane’s condition would be known within 24 hours. “It’s difficult to say how things are now because the game has just finished. We have to wait 24 hours and then we will know the result,” said Ten Hag.

“With injuries like this, we have to wait until the medical team does their job and diagnoses,” the Dutchman continued. “We can understand he is emotional (because of his injury), but we have to wait because we don’t know. Once the diagnosis is out, we can come to a conclusion,” said Ten Hag.

Raphael Varane was part of the French national team when they became world champions. He is also still one of Les Bleus’ mainstays for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. The Qatar 2022 World Cup will take place in 28 days. The first match of the 2022 World Cup is scheduled for November 20, 2022.
