Augusto Fernandez Wins the 2022 Moto2 World Champion

Red Bull KTM Ajo rider Augusto Fernandez on Sunday won the 2022 title of Moto2 world champion at the end of the final round of the season at the Ricardo Tormo Circuit in Valencia.

The title was sealed when the Japanese Ay Ogura slipped during the race. Fernandez, who started from the pole position, didn’t fall, finishing second behind teammate Pedro Acosta before the party began on his home track.

“I really enjoyed the race, I tried to snatch the victory but Pedro was incredible today, he was super fast,” Fernandez said.

Fernandez has had a Dominant the 2022 season with four wins, nine podiums and two pole positions since the season kicked off in March at the Losail International Circuit in Qatar.

The Spaniard started the year with fourth position in the opening race in Qatar. Fernandez took his first podium finish at the French Grand Prix at Le Mans, which was also his first win of the season.

Fernandez added a rostrum finish at Circuit de Barcelona, in Catalunya, before the five-week summer break.

His best performances came in the second half of the season. The Red Bull KTM Ajo Moto2 rider returned after the summer break with three wins in a row, at the Sachsenring, Assen and Silverstone.

The British Grand Prix was a key moment of the campaign: After winning from pole on the British circuit, he became the new leader in the standings.

In the final rounds of the season, Fernandez managed to score three more podiums (in San Marino, Aragon and Japan) and started this weekend as leader in the standings, 23 points ahead of his only remaining title rival Ogura.

There is still no definite future, but in statements to the newspaper Marca, Fernandez admitted that he sees the stay with Red Bull KTM Ajo in 2023.

“I would stay. I’m happy, I have a great team and I would be delighted to do it again with them.” Fernandez said.
